Although current UK laws do not implicitly stipulate PAT testing be carried out, PAT testing does ensure compliance with the following legal obligations.

UK legislation places a duty of care on employers and employees to ensure the safety of all persons using the work premises.
- Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

Employers are required to assess the risk to health and safety of employees and non-employees connected with the business
- The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999

Employers are required to ensure equipment is maintained in an efficient state and is in good repair
- The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1992

All electrical equipment must be mantained so as to prevent danger
- The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989

PAT testing provides a documented procedure to prove adherence to current UK legislation. PAT testing may also be a requirement of certain insurance policy wordings.
